Florida Murder Case: The Adelson Family, the Killing of Dan Markel, and the Trial of Donna Adelson

A privileged family’s downfall: from wealth and success to conspiracy, contract killing, and the courtroom

The Case Opens Again

In Florida, a high-profile trial is now underway against Donna Adelson, dubbed by American media the “grandmother murderer.” Adelson, a wealthy Miami resident from a prominent Jewish family, is accused of orchestrating the 2014 murder of her son-in-law, law professor Dan Markel. After eleven months of delays, a Florida court has ruled there will be no further postponements, and proceedings have begun.

The next potential development, prosecutors note, could be the indictment of Adelson’s daughter Wendy — although the timing remains uncertain.

The Murder of Dan Markel
On August 2014, Dan Markel, a Harvard-educated law professor at Florida State University, was embroiled in a bitter divorce from his wife, Wendy Adelson. The court had ruled that the couple’s two children, Benjamin and Lincoln, would remain in Tallahassee under shared custody, preventing Wendy from relocating them to Miami near her family.

On the morning of August 18, 2014, after dropping his children at daycare, Markel drove home briefly and then returned to campus. As he parked in his driveway, two men approached his car. Markel was still seated inside when one of the assailants pulled out a gun and fired at point-blank range through the window. Gravely wounded, he was rushed to hospital but died the following day.

The Adelson Family
The Adelsons were an affluent Miami family. Harvey Adelson, a successful dentist, and his wife Donna lived in a luxury ocean-front apartment. Their three children — Robert, Charlie, and Wendy — all pursued high-status careers. Robert, an orthopedic doctor, distanced himself from the family years ago and built an independent life in upstate New York. Charlie, a dentist and playboy, maintained a close and dependent relationship with his domineering mother. Wendy, the youngest, became a lawyer.

Investigators describe Donna Adelson as manipulative and controlling, exerting enormous influence over her children. In this family dynamic, decisions often served loyalty to the “clan,” even when they crossed into criminality.

The Divorce Dispute and Murder Plot
Wendy Adelson’s divorce from Dan Markel was marked by acrimony. Markel resisted Wendy’s repeated attempts to relocate their children to Miami. At one point, he even filed a complaint to the bar over her financial disclosures, threatening her law career.

Within the Adelson family, frustration reportedly turned to violent talk. Jokes about “just killing him” gradually gave way to a real plan. Prosecutors allege Donna and Charlie Adelson led the conspiracy, with Wendy fully aware.

Because the family lacked underworld contacts, Charlie turned to his girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, who linked him to her ex-partner, Sigfredo Garcia, a petty criminal. Garcia and his associate Luis Rivera, a gang member, agreed to carry out the hit. Payment was disguised as $150,000 in checks to Magbanua, described as “consulting work” for the family’s dental clinic.

The Investigation and Arrests
CCTV footage near the crime scene revealed a rented Toyota Prius. It took investigators two years to trace the car back to Garcia. Rivera eventually confessed, implicating both Garcia and Magbanua. Garcia received life imprisonment, Rivera thirty years with parole, and Magbanua later life imprisonment for conspiracy and first-degree murder.

Attention then shifted to the Adelsons. The FBI staged an undercover operation known as “The Bump,” in which an agent posed as Rivera’s brother and approached Donna Adelson for extortion money. Conversations recorded between Donna and Charlie suggested knowledge of the plot. Charlie was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to life.

Donna attempted to flee to Vietnam, a country without an extradition treaty, but was intercepted at Miami airport. She now faces trial for orchestrating the murder.

Wendy Adelson’s Role
Suspicion also surrounds Wendy Adelson. She changed her children’s surname from Markel to Adelson after the murder, cut contact between them and their grandparents, and made statements that investigators considered manipulative or misleading. On the day of the murder, she was recorded making unusual trips near the crime scene and allegedly attempted to cast suspicion on her ex-boyfriend.

Though never charged, prosecutors are weighing whether evidence from Donna’s trial could justify moving against Wendy next.

Family Breakdown
The saga has torn the Adelsons apart. Robert, the eldest son, cut ties decades earlier but testified against his mother, describing her manipulative control and the red flags he recognized after the murder. Wendy, once the favored child, now distances herself from her mother while fearing she may be the next to face charges.

The family that appeared wealthy, educated, and successful — with luxury homes, multimillion-dollar assets, and professional status — has collapsed under the weight of betrayal, manipulation, and violence. What began as a custody dispute ended in assassination, a shattered family, and a legal drama that continues to unfold.
