Governor DeSantis Proposes Florida Take Over Everglades Restoration from Federal Government

Governor DeSantis Proposes Florida Take Over Everglades Restoration from Federal Government

Aiming to cut federal red tape, Florida's governor seeks state control of a decades-long restoration effort, raising questions about oversight and funding.
In a bold move that could reshape environmental management in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday his intention to ask President-elect Donald Trump to allow Florida to assume full control of the Everglades restoration effort.

This proposal would effectively end a 25-year partnership between the state and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has overseen the initiative since it was authorized by Congress in 2000.

The current partnership, designed to share costs and ensure federal oversight of environmental protections, has seen its share of tensions.

While the collaboration has ensured adherence to stringent federal environmental standards, it has also been plagued by repeated delays, often attributed to congressional gridlock.

These delays have caused project costs to balloon from initial estimates, now reaching an estimated $23 billion—four times the original projection.

Governor DeSantis criticized the Corps’ bureaucratic approach during a press conference in Juno Beach, emphasizing the state’s frustration with the slow pace of progress.

“We don’t want to be bogged down by red tape.

We don’t want to be bogged down by bureaucracy,” he stated, pointing to Florida’s financial contributions to the project as evidence of the state’s commitment.

While DeSantis claims Florida has outspent the Corps on the restoration plan, recent data shows a nearly even split in expenditures, with the Corps spending $2.6 billion and the state contributing $2.8 billion.

In addition, Florida has allocated another $2.6 billion to address water pollution, a separate but related issue for which the state bears full financial responsibility.

A key point of contention is the timeline for constructing a critical reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee.

The reservoir, seen as essential for reducing pollution flowing from the lake to northern estuaries during Florida’s rainy season, has faced significant delays.

These setbacks, DeSantis argues, are indicative of the Corps’ inefficiency.

However, the delays stem partly from design changes mandated by safety concerns.

The project was initially planned as a large, shallow reservoir but was later downsized by Florida lawmakers into a smaller, deeper structure, necessitating a massive embankment wall.

The Corps has maintained strict safety standards, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, where levee failures led to devastating flooding in New Orleans—a disaster partially attributed to design shortcuts demanded by local officials.

Despite the criticism, the Corps’ cautious approach is not without merit.

A recently completed reservoir unrelated to the Lake Okeechobee project has already encountered leakage issues, underscoring the importance of thorough safety assessments.

Moreover, federal oversight ensures that restoration efforts adhere to rigorous environmental standards, which are often stricter than state regulations.

If Florida assumes sole control of the Everglades restoration, questions will inevitably arise about funding, oversight, and long-term environmental protections.

The Everglades, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a critical ecosystem supporting diverse wildlife and providing water to millions of Floridians.

Balancing economic and environmental priorities will be key as the state charts a path forward in what has already been a monumental undertaking.
