The Washington Commanders have dismissed offensive line coach Bobby Johnson as part of a sweeping restructuring of their coaching staff following a disappointing 5-12 finish in the 2025 National Football League season.
The decision, announced on Tuesday, follows the team’s earlier departures of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. as head coach Dan Quinn pursues a fresh approach to reverse the franchise’s fortunes.
Johnson, who joined the Commanders in 2024 after a lengthy career coaching offensive lines in the league, had been responsible for guiding a unit that contributed to one of the league’s most productive rushing attacks in 2024.
However, the offensive line endured significant challenges in 2025, hampered by injuries and inconsistent performance that coincided with a downturn in the team’s overall offensive productivity.
The move underscores the franchise’s broader intent to refresh its coaching infrastructure in response to back-to-back seasons of underachievement.
Johnson’s departure comes amid speculation that the Commanders will pursue new leadership across multiple positional groups in hopes of reinvigorating development and performance, particularly in protecting quarterback Jayden Daniels and establishing greater cohesion up front.
Former assistants and potential external candidates are now expected to be considered for the role as the offseason progresses.
Johnson’s NFL coaching tenure included stops with the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills and other teams prior to his stint in Washington.
While his unit has exhibited both highs and lows over the past two seasons, the leadership change reflects a broader strategic reset as the Commanders aim to retool ahead of the 2026 campaign.
The team’s front office and Quinn’s staff will now prioritise identifying a replacement capable of fortifying the offensive line in key areas of pass protection and run blocking.
Final decisions on other staff roles are anticipated in the coming weeks as the organisation prepares for the new season.
