Michelin Guide Expands to Palm Beach County: A New Era for Florida's Culinary Scene

Palm Beach County restaurants to be evaluated for Michelin stars as part of the Guide's 2025 edition.
Palm Beach County, Florida, is set to join the ranks of distinguished dining destinations as the Michelin Guide announces its expansion to evaluate local restaurants for the 2025 edition.

Prior to this development, residents seeking Michelin-starred dining had to travel to cities such as Miami, Orlando, or Tampa for such experiences.

The upcoming digital edition of the Michelin Guide, which will include the Palm Beach area, is anticipated to be released later this year.

The Michelin Guide’s decision comes amidst a broader initiative to highlight Florida’s growing culinary landscape, which features a diverse range of emerging talent and international influences.

In addition to Palm Beach County, Greater Fort Lauderdale and the St. Pete-Clearwater region will also be included in the 2025 Guide, with plans to encompass the entire state in 2026.

Local chefs have expressed enthusiasm for the recognition that the Michelin Guide brings.

Clay Conley, a notable chef and partner at Ember Group, which operates several popular restaurants including Buccan and Grato, remarked on the local culinary scene's high caliber by stating, "There are a lot of great restaurants in this area; it's nice to have them recognized."

Lindsay Autry, chef of Honeybelle, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the presence of the Michelin Guide validates Palm Beach County as a significant culinary destination.

She noted the remarkable growth of the area’s dining offerings in recent years.

Historically, the Michelin Guide originated as a marketing tool for the French tire company in 1889, eventually evolving into a prestigious system of evaluating restaurants worldwide.

The Guide awarded its first stars in 1926 and has since expanded globally, with the first U.S. edition released in New York in 2005. Florida's first Michelin Guide debuted in 2022, featuring the culinary offerings of Miami, Orlando, and Tampa thanks to a partnership between Visit Florida and the Michelin Guide.

The state has committed over $1 million to introduce the Michelin Guide to Florida's culinary scene.

This financial collaboration aims to promote dining experiences while ensuring that the inspectors’ evaluations remain impartial and based solely on the quality of the dining establishments.

For the upcoming inclusion of Palm Beach County, a budget of $180,000 has been outlined, covering both 2025 and 2026 evaluations.

It is important to note that while restaurants are being evaluated, stars are not assured.

The Michelin star system categorizes restaurants into three distinct levels based on their culinary excellence.

One star denotes high-quality food, two stars signify refined cooking that reflects the chef's expertise, and three stars are awarded for exceptional culinary artistry.

In total, Florida boasts 150 Michelin-listed restaurants, with 25 receiving one star and none achieving the esteemed three-star rating.

Additionally, the Guide recognizes 'Bib Gourmand' establishments that serve good food at moderate prices, with Florida currently having 31 such restaurants.

There are also two eco-conscious establishments earning the 'green star' designation.

According to chef-partner Lisabet Summa from Big Time Restaurant Group, the Michelin Guide’s expanding criteria acknowledge a range of dining experiences beyond formal settings, accommodating diverse restaurant styles within its evaluative framework.

The Guide employs five criteria for assessment, focusing on product quality, flavor harmony, mastery of cooking techniques, the chef's culinary voice, and consistency across multiple visits.

The anticipated arrival of the Michelin Guide in Palm Beach County is viewed as beneficial not only for local restaurants but also for patrons seeking high-quality dining options.

Notably, establishments such as Moody Tongue Sushi, which has ties to Michelin-starred venues in Chicago and New York City, foresee the Guide increasing attention on the local culinary community.

Milton Segarra, CEO of Discover The Palm Beaches, underscored the importance of local dining options in enhancing the region's overall vacation experience.

The Michelin Guide's broader coverage thus signals a significant development in Florida's status as a culinary destination.
