NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is embarking on a new phase of collaboration with three prominent Florida universities to drive the nation's space exploration goals.

The partnership, formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed on January 8, 2024, brings together the University of Florida, University of Central Florida, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University under the newly created Florida University Space Research Consortium.

This consortium, designated as the state's official space research entity, will provide critical research and development support for NASA's ambitious Moon to Mars Initiative, which seeks to further human exploration across the solar system.

The agreement signals a unique collaboration, as Florida becomes the first state with a university consortium directly affiliated with a NASA center.

The memorandum of understanding was signed at Kennedy Space Center with key figures including NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, highlighting the importance of Florida’s growing aerospace industry.

Governor DeSantis emphasized the state's position as an ideal hub for space innovation, noting its established aerospace sector and world-class universities.

The consortium’s mission is to foster academic collaboration, joint projects, and workforce development between NASA and Florida's universities.

This partnership will enhance research output in aerospace engineering, robotics, materials science, and environmental science, all critical for long-term human space exploration.

The agreement also represents a milestone for the UF Astraeus Space Institute, a new initiative at the University of Florida designed to promote space mission innovation.

As more universities in Florida join the consortium, the collaborative efforts are expected to accelerate advancements in space exploration, reinforcing the state’s leadership in global aerospace research and development.
