Rudy Giuliani Is on Trial for Assets in a Defamation Case

The former New York Mayor is required to testify to assess if he can retain his Florida home and World Series rings following a defamation judgment.
Rudy Giuliani, the ex-Mayor of New York City and former attorney for President Donald Trump, is scheduled to testify in a federal court trial in Manhattan starting Thursday.

The trial concerns whether Giuliani can keep his Florida condominium and three World Series rings or if they must be surrendered to settle a $148 million defamation judgment awarded to Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss.

The proceeding is not about revisiting Giuliani's defamatory actions, which have already led to a judgment, but rather about whether he can retain valuable assets amid the defamation case.

At 80, Giuliani will be the first witness and needs to prove that his Palm Beach condo is his homestead to keep it.

Giuliani claims to have established residence in the condo in January 2024, but the election workers' attorneys argue that his main residence was his New York apartment until it was given up last fall as part of the judgment.

Also in question are three World Series rings, which Giuliani claims he gifted to his son Andrew in 2018. The election workers' legal team contends that Giuliani failed to properly record the rings as a gift in tax documents, and the son neither insured the rings nor reported them on his tax returns.

Giuliani has already handed over other valuable assets, including a New York apartment valued at about $5 million, a vintage Mercedes once owned by actress Lauren Bacall, and several luxury watches.

The defamation judgment was awarded after Freeman and Moss alleged that Giuliani’s false claims about the 2020 presidential election led to threats against them.

Giuliani's total assets are estimated at under $10 million, with the Florida condo appraised at over $3 million.

The trial adds another chapter to Giuliani's legal and financial struggles following his persistent false claims about the 2020 election and his role in efforts to contest its results.
