Tony Araujo Appointed Police Chief of West Palm Beach Amid Staffing Challenges

Mayor Keith James appoints Tony Araujo as police chief following interim leadership, addressing department issues and community concerns.
West Palm Beach, FL — On February 3, 2024, Mayor Keith James announced the appointment of Tony Araujo, a long-time local law enforcement veteran, as the new police chief of West Palm Beach, following a period of interim leadership.

Araujo, who previously served as the interim chief since October, was chosen without a national search, a decision that received mixed reactions from city officials.

Araujo succeeded Frank Adderley, who was dismissed due to financial improprieties within the department.

The appointment was affirmed unanimously by the West Palm Beach City Commission.

During the meeting, James expressed confidence in Araujo’s leadership and his capability to navigate significant challenges facing the police department, including staffing shortages exacerbated by ongoing investigations.

'Over the past several months, he has not only met that challenge but has exceeded it beyond my wildest expectations,' James stated.

Araujo, 65, has been with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) since 1982, ascending through various ranks to colonel.

His deep ties to West Palm Beach—including having graduated from North Shore High School and a long-standing residence—were highlighted as beneficial in understanding community needs.

The West Palm Beach Police Department has faced scrutiny due to allegations of financial misconduct and a police chase in July 2023 resulting in fatalities.

The ongoing investigations have placed seven officers and several administrative staff on paid leave, heightening the strain on an already understaffed department.

Araujo emphasized the importance of due diligence in these investigations, stating, 'The officers are afforded due process.

These are lengthy investigations.

They're very detailed.'

As staffing challenges persist, Araujo noted that his command staff is working extended hours, with some members logging 70 to 80 hours per week to maintain police operations.

'We're doing double duty, of sorts,' Araujo mentioned.

Mayor James acknowledged the unsustainable nature of this situation but praised Araujo’s capability to ensure community safety during this transitional period.

In addressing immigration enforcement, Araujo reaffirmed that the West Palm Beach Police Department will not actively pursue undocumented individuals and will only engage with federal immigration officials on a case-by-case basis.

'We're local law enforcement.

The police department's not going to go on every block and check somebody to see what their immigration status is,' Araujo clarified.

Araujo also announced modifications to officer deployment strategies, emphasizing sector coverage for patrol officers to enhance community relations and response times.

This new approach aims to build familiarity between officers and residents, allowing for more effective policing within designated areas.

In terms of compensation, Araujo will receive an annual salary of $231,000 during his leadership of a department that includes 446 sworn and civilian employees and operates on a budget of $97 million.

He noted that the role involved a pay cut from his previous position at PBSO but expressed commitment to allocating his resources toward enhancing public safety and department culture.

The appointment of Tony Araujo marks a new chapter for the West Palm Beach Police Department as it seeks to navigate challenges and restore community trust following recent tumultuous events.
