Chaos in Chicago: Teen Shot During Children’s Soccer Game at North Side Park

A 17-year-old was critically injured when a scooter-riding assailant opened fire during a youth match in West Rogers Park; suspect now charged
A shooting incident on the Far North Side of Chicago left a 17-year-old boy critically injured during a children’s soccer game on a neighborhood park’s field.

The incident occurred just before five o’clock on Sunday afternoon at the soccer field adjacent to Stone Scholastic Academy in West Rogers Park, located at 6239 North Leavitt Street.

At that time, a youth soccer match was taking place nearby, attended by families and young children.

According to police, the victim was approached by another teenager who arrived on an electric scooter, produced a firearm, and demanded his belongings.

After taking the victim’s phone and backpack, the assailant opened fire.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds: one through the forearm and another that passed through his arm into his chest and exited the other side.

Emergency responders transported the 17-year-old to St. Francis Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as children fled from the field.

One mother recounted hearing a sudden loud noise resembling a firework, followed by children screaming, “Someone’s been shot.” Another witness, present with her own children, described the attacker retrieving a gun from a fanny pack and firing at the victim as he pleaded, “Please don’t shoot me.”

Surveillance footage later traced the suspect fleeing on the scooter.

Investigators noted similarities to other recent armed robberies in the area involving scooter-borne perpetrators.

In late August, authorities arrested a 17-year-old in connection with the shooting.

The suspect, who remains unidentified publicly due to juvenile status, faces charges including attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and armed robbery.

He was apprehended in the 5900 block of North Glenwood Avenue.

Police continue to investigate the incident, reviewing video evidence and soliciting public assistance.

The community remains deeply shaken, particularly given the proximity of children and the public setting of the attack.
