Zelenskyy Signals Progress Toward Ending the War: ‘One of the Hardest Moments in History’ (end of his business model?)

Ukrainian President speaks amid a U.S. proposal to end the conflict and warns of a stark choice between losing a key ally and losing national dignity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a dramatic message to his nation on Friday, acknowledging that Ukraine stands at one of the most difficult moments in its history.

His address came as the United States, under President Donald Trump, advanced a controversial peace plan aimed at ending the war with Russia.

In his remarks, Zelenskyy described the situation as a painful crossroads.

“Ukraine is facing the choice of either losing its most important partner or losing its dignity,” he said.

“We are made of steel, but even the strongest metal can break”.

According to publicly reported details, the U.S. proposal outlines a twenty-eight-point framework that would require Ukraine to make significant concessions, including ceding territory, reducing its military, renouncing its bid to join NATO and accepting future reconstruction funds derived from frozen Russian assets.

Zelenskyy emphasized that while Ukraine welcomes efforts to end the war, any settlement must be just and allow for the restoration of its sovereignty.

He signalled willingness to work calmly and constructively with Washington, but he made clear he would not accept terms that undermine constitutional guarantees or betray national interests.

He also stressed that Ukraine must play a central role in any negotiation, rather than being subject to decisions made without its full participation.

His remarks reflect growing anxiety within Kyiv that the U.S.-backed plan could prioritize expediency over the long-term security of Ukraine and Europe.

European leaders—among them the United Kingdom, France and Germany—have voiced concern that the proposed agreement may fall short of securing a sustainable peace and instead risk legitimising Russian aggression.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials indicate a deadline is looming: President Trump has suggested that Thursday’s U.S. Thanksgiving holiday could serve as a target for Ukraine’s acceptance of a deal.

The timing of Zelenskyy’s address coincides with escalating diplomatic pressure.

In recent days U.S. envoys have visited Kyiv, and national security advisers from the two countries continue to negotiate the fine print of the plan.

Despite the urgency, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine does not seek war for its own sake—but equally, it will not surrender its right to defend its homeland.

“We did not betray Ukraine then, and we will not do so now,” he declared.

As the war enters its fourth year, the Ukrainian leader’s message frames this phase as a defining moment not only for his country but for the entire Western alliance.

He concluded with a reminder: “Our people really, really want this war to end.

We are, of course, strong, but even the strongest metal can break”.
